Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty to assist Al-Nassr defeat Al-Ta'ee 2-0 on Tuesday, giving them a chance to win the Saudi Pro League championship in his first season at the club.
Al-Ittihad, the league's top team, threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Al-Hilal, bringing Al-Nassr to within three points of first place with three games still to play.
In their head-to-head matchup with Al-Nassr, the first tiebreaker if clubs finish level on points, Al-Ittihad still has the lead.Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot for Al-Nassr at Al-Ta'ee Stadium in Ha'il shortly after halftime to give them the lead, and Brazilian Talisca sealed the victory 10 minutes before the final siren.
At the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, Ronaldo was also there—at least in spirit—when Al-Hilal scored contentious goals at the end of each half to fight back and hold Al-Ittihad to a draw.
Igor Coronado and Ahmed Bamsoud gave Al-Ittihad the lead in the opening thirty minutes, but Musab Aljuwayr halved the score four minutes before halftime.Prior to VAR's confirmation that the ball had in fact crossed the goal line, the teenager's cross appeared to have been held in play by Al-Ittihad goalie Marcelo Grohe for more than a minute.
When Al-Hilal striker Michael's shot appeared to have been cleared by defender Ahmed Hegazy in stoppage time at the conclusion of the game, VAR once more confirmed that the goal-line had been crossed.
The Brazilian added insult to injury by imitating Ronaldo's signature "Siiii!" goal celebration in front of the visiting supporters, which infuriated the Al-Ittihad players.
