Austria has dismissed the possibility of new sources for gas other than Russia . Austrian chancellor said there is no alternative to Russian gas for now . He blamed the pipeline system layout in Europe as reason for relying on Russian gas .
Karl Nehammer remarked that Austria is bound to receive bulk of its gas from Russia . However the chancellor said Austria is taking steps to cushion the potential cutting of gas transit through Ukraine by the end of 2023 and try to diversify suppliers .
He added that Austria has built up a strategic reserve for the time being . The EU nation revealed that Austria is also finding alternative gas sources . Austria largest has provider, OMV , has contract signed with Russia majority stated owned gas giant Gazprom , until 2040 .
