Guilty of Killing His Wife, Kerala Man Receives Life Sentence in the U.S

"Quite painful news has come up from the United States. According to media reports, a court in Florida has sentenced an Indian origin man to life imprisonment without parole for the gruesome murder of his wife. Reportedly, Philip Joy, the accused, killed his wife by stabbing her 17 times and then driving a car over her. Marin Joy, age 27, who was working at Broward Health Hospital in Coral Springs in Miami, was stabbed with a knife and run over by a car by her husband, Philip Matthew, age 37, at the car park of the hospital on July 28th, 2020.

Marin was living separately from Philip Joy due to her allegations of domestic violence. The troubled couple was originally from the state of Kerala. Marin Joy had already accused Philip Matthew of domestic abuse. Witnesses said Matthew drove a car over Joy, who pleaded for help and revealed her attacker before her death. In this tragic incident, she cried to colleagues, 'I have a baby.'

Philip Matthew on third November pleaded no contest to the first-degree murder of Joy, his wife, who was planning an escape from an abusive relationship. The court was preparing to issue a death sentence against Philip Matthew following his acceptance of the gruesome crime. But in the final moments, the choice was altered. Paula McMahon, a spokeswoman for the state attorney's office, stated that the decision to forego the death penalty was made because the defendant was forfeiting his right to appeal and because the life sentence was guaranteed.

The family of Marin Joy conveyed their joy at the ruling and emphasized that Marin had been given justice as a result of the final decision. Furthermore, Marin has a daughter who resides with the grandparents now. However, Marin Joy's case highlights a rising number of domestic abuse reports in the United States. How long will women put up with these abhorrent crimes? Make no mistake, stricter laws are more than necessary."
