Israel-Gaza War: Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt closed due to security, says U.S

The US State Department announced on Wednesday that the Rafa border crossing between Gaza and Egypt was closed due to a security circumstance. The United States expects that the Egypt-controlled crossing will be reopened at regular intervals to allow aid to enter the Gaza Strip, and foreign nationals to depart, said Vidant Patel, US State Department deputy spokesperson. Patel stated, "Our understanding is that given a security circumstance that brought the border closing, Rafa border crossing remains closed today, but this is something that we are continuing to work with in partnership with the government of Egypt and the government of Israel."

According to reports, more Canadians were set to make a journey to safety from Gaza at the Rafa Crossing with Egypt on Wednesday, only to learn that the border was closed again. Global Affairs Canada stated late Tuesday that 40 Canadians, permanent residents, and family members were on the latest list of those approved to exit the war-torn Gaza Strip, after the first group of 75 left on Tuesday. Canadians who were at the border for crossing were contacted, and there is hope that the border will reopen tomorrow to allow them to cross. Canada does not determine when or how many persons can cross each day, Global Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday.

In recent days, scores of injured Palestinians and foreign passport holders were evacuated from the Gaza Strip to Egypt via the Rafa border crossing, according to Palestinian sources. Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7th. At least 10,569 Palestinians, including 4,324 children and 2,823 women, have been killed, and the Israeli death toll nears 1,600, according to officials.
