Japan Airlines airliner crashes into a Coast Guard aircraft, killing five people.

A tragic incident occurred at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, resulting in the loss of five lives aboard a Coast Guard aircraft after a runway collision with a Japan Airlines plane. According to Transport Minister T. Suido, the captain of the Coast Guard plane managed to escape, but unfortunately, five individuals did not survive. In contrast, all 379 passengers and crew on the Japan Airlines plane managed to escape unharmed from the fire that broke out after the collision with the Coast Guard aircraft.

Distressing visuals depicted the aircraft engulfed in flames while rescue teams worked diligently to contain the fire. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida directed relevant agencies to collaborate swiftly in assessing the damage. The Japan Coast Guard is actively investigating the potential collision between one of its aircraft and the passenger jet. In a positive development, five out of the six initially unaccounted crew members of the Coast Guard aircraft involved in the crash have since been located.

Haneda Airport has taken the precautionary measure of closing all runways in the aftermath of the incident. The distressing incident involved a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 flight numbered JAL 516 originating from Shin Chitose Airport. The aircraft erupted into flames on the runway, reportedly colliding with another aircraft, possibly a Japan Coast Guard plane, shortly after landing. NHK footage captured large bursts of fire and smoke emanating from the Japan Airlines plane as it taxied on the runway, eventually being completely engulfed in flames.

Despite the severity of the situation, all 367 passengers, including eight toddlers, and the 12 crew members on board were successfully evacuated, ensuring their safety. The Japan Coast Guard plane stationed at Haneda had been scheduled to transport relief goods to Niigata for residents affected by a recent earthquake in the region that claimed the lives of at least 48 people on Monday.

Haneda, being one of Japan's busiest airports, witnessed significant travel activity, particularly during the New Year holidays.
