Vladimir Putin awards Ex- U.S Intelligence contractor with Russian Citizenship. Edward Snowden who exposed the the scale of secret surveillance operations by the National Security Agency (NSA) of the U.S is now a Russian National .
Ex-U.S Intelligence contractor name appeared in a Vladimir Putin decree conferring a Citizenship on a list of 72 foreign-born individual. Snowden who is wanted in the U.S will now to get all Russian Citizenship benefits.
Why is Snowden wanted in the U.S .
In 2016 computer expert and Former CIA systems administrator Edward Snowden released confidential documents to the press about the existence of the surveillance programs .
According to many legal experts and the U.S government his actions violated the espionage act of 1917 which identified the leak of state secret as an act of treason. Despite the fact that he broke the law Snowden argued that he had a moral obligation to act.
He gave justification for his "whistleblowing" by stating that he had a duty to inform the public as to what is being done in their name and that which is done against them. According to the Snowden the government violation of privacy had to be exposed regardless of legality.
Snowden fled the U.S and was given Asylum in Russia after leaking secret files in 2013 . In 2017 Russian president Vladimir Putin himself Said that Snowden was wrong to leak U.S secret but refused to call him a traitor.
In a 2020 tweet Snowden had announced that he would be applying for Russian citizenship . American authorities have for years wanted Snowden returned to the United States to face a criminal trial on espionage charges .
If proven guilty in the U.S court Snowden may face prison for up to 30 years.
However many Americans have backed Snowden for" Revealing" the truth over the years .
