Significance Of The Kakhovka Dam
30 meters tall and 3.2 km long dam was built in 1956 on the Dnipro river as part of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant .
Holds an 18 km reservoir which supplies water to crimea annexed by Russia in 2014 and to Zapoeizhzhia nuclear plant which is also under Russian control.

As per report ,flooding after dam destruction would reach Kherson in two hours achieve high water in 14 hours and fall back to normal levels in 72 hours.
Volume of water in the reservoir is about equal to the great salt lake in the US state of Utah .
Russian forces alleged that Ukrainian were preparing a massive strike on the dam . Sergei Surovikin the commander of the Russian forces in Ukraine said Kyiv was planning massive missiles strike with US made himars on the strategic dam .
Ukrainian officials called allegation a sign that Moscow planned to attack and blame Kyiv . Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky said that Russia had mined the dam and was preparing to blow up it .A step he compared to the use of weapons of mass destructions .
