Largest Aircraft Carrier in India | Did you know

 

India biggest and longest aircraft carrier is INS Vikramaditya. 

Commissioned in November 2013 by… the then defense minister A.K Antony . It has a length of 284 m with a maximum beam of of 60m and a weight of 44,500 tonnes.

This aircraft carrier has 22 decks and 2,500 compartments.

With over 1600 personnel on board INS Vikramaditya is a floating city .

This large population requires a large amount of supplies nearly …. a  lakh eggs 20000 liters of milk and 16 tonnes of rice per month .

Including all the stocks for provision this ship is capable of sustaining herself at sea for a period of about 45 days . INS Vikramaditya has a top speed of more than 30 kts with a maximum ranges of 7000 nautical miles . 


Originally built as Baku commissioned in 1987 the carrier first served with the soviet Navy . Later it went to the Russian Navy as Admiral Gorshkov before being decommissioned in 1996.


India invested a total of 4,881.67Cr in the transformation of the old ship including new upgrades . The upgrade involved stripping all the weaponry and missile launcher tubes to make way for a “Short take off but arrested recovery” system.

New sensors were also added to allow the ship to create a surveillance bubble around the ship of more than 500 km. INS Vikramaditya is equipped with 234 new hull sections that were constructed using 2,500t of steel . 


This ship has the ability to carry over 30 aircrafts comprising an assortment of MIG29K/ Sea Harrier Kamov 31 , Kamov 28 Sea King , ALH-Dhruv and Chetak helicopters. Not only this it was the first Indian Navy ship to have an ATM on board .
