Miss Universe 2023 honored Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst on Saturday. The American television journalist and model committed suicide last year. His mother, April Simpkins, stressed the importance of mental health.
Cheslie Kryst's mother took part in the Miss Universe pageant almost a year after her daughter's death. The 30-year-old woman died in New York, after jumping from her high-rise building in Midtown Manhattan.
April Simpkins thanked Miss Universe for remembering her daughter. He also talked about mental health awareness.
"Just because someone tells you they're good doesn't mean they're good. We all need to listen. Together we can break the stigma of talking more about mental health. Good,” Simpkins said.
He called Kryst his best friend, who he chatted with, FaceTimed and texted every day. I have never known pain as deep as this. I was forever changed. His life was short, but he only had beautiful moments that his loved ones will cherish forever. We miss his laugh, his wise words, his sense of humor and especially his hugs. We miss everything - we miss it completely. He was an important part of our family, which makes this loss even more heartbreaking.
"I love you with all my heart. I miss you so much. I know that one day we will be together again. Until then, rest in peace,” concluded April Simpkins.
Miss Dominican Republic, Miss USA and Miss Venezuela were chosen among the top three. Everyone was asked if they won Miss Universe, how they would work to present this as an empowering and progressive organization.Miss USA was crowned Miss Universe.
