Putin scores victory in Ukraine Soledar. Zelensky troops retreat from Soledar report. Soledar falls to Russia focus shifts to Bakhmut.
Huge setback to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in fight against Russia . Ukrainian forces have pulled back from the strategic town of Soledar in east donetsk region. This after Russian forces captured the salt-mining town of Soledar earlier this month.
Ukraine Deserts Soledar
After months of heavy fighting including over the past weeks the armed forces of Ukraine left Soledar and retreated along the outskirts to pre-prepared positions . While some soldiers were holding the outskirts of Soledar others were building a defensive line fortifying new points while at the same time delivering a massive blow to the enemy . There had been no mss capture or encirclement of Ukraine forces (Ukraine Military Spokesperson to AFP)
Capturing soledar is Moscow first battlefield victory in moths after series of setbacks . It will allow Russian troops to cut Ukraine supply line to the key town of Bakhmut . Bakhmut is an essential target for Russia in its fight to claim the entire donetsk region.
Russia Wagner group claimed to have spearheaded the soledar offensive . Vladimir Putin private militia claimed to have captured the key salt-mining town on Jan 11. Meanwhile Putin forces have now shifted their focus on capturing Bakhmut.
Heavy fighting is underway in north of Bakhmut as Russian forces push to take town . Russia has been aiming for full control of Donbas a region made up of Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia has seized most of Luhansk but half of Donetsk is still under Ukraine control.
