Biden dares Xi Jinping as tensions with China simmer
US sends carrier strike group to China sea
A US carrier strike group began operating in the South China sea on Thursday . CNN reported that two Chinese ships have already started tailing the US group . The US navy deployment comes amid heightened tensions with China which claim a wide swathe of the south China sea as its sovereign territory .
The Chinese ships tailing the US group include a guided missile cruiser an aircraft carrier and three guided missile destroyers of the PLA navy . According to the CNN the US nimitz carrier strike group has lethal and non lethal capabilities from space to undersea across every axis and every domin.
This reportedly the first time nimitz group has entered the South China Sea. The move comes as America boosts its presence in the region to deter China. Under Xi Jinping China is undergoing a rapid modernisation and expansion of its own military and nuclear capabilities as it grows aggressive in the region.
To counter China expansive claims the US and Japan announced a bolstered US marine presence in Okinawa designed to bring their militaries closer. Just three weeks ago a Chinese J-11 fighter jet came within 100 feet of a US Air Force RC-135 Aircraft over the South China sea forcing the American jet to take “Evasive Maneuvers” to avoid a collision with the Chinese jet.
China fired back at US claim saying it was the American jet that abruptly changed its flight attitude with a dangerous approaching maneuver . The encounter highlighted the inherent tensions between US and China over South China sea were Beijing has continued to militarise serval islands .
