Big reval amid Putin hacking campaign against Kyiv backers
A Russian hacking team “Cold River” targeted three US nuclear research labs past summer. An investigative report by reuters and 5 cybersecurity experts who reviewed the internet records blow the lid off the extent of Russian government involvement in the hacking .
Between August and September when Putin indicated Russia would be willing to use nuclear arms “Cold River” targeted brookhaven , Argonne & Lawrence livermore national labs the US .
Reuters hacker created fake login pages for each institution & emailing nuclear scientists.
This made the scientist reveal their passwords allowing “Cold River” to indulge in cyber hacking. Reuters however , was unable to find out why the labs were targeted or if intrusion happened . There was no immediate response from the 3 labs or the US dept of energy to reuters question .
The Russian hacking group has reportedly escalated its hacking campaign against Ukraine allies . Recently”Cold River” has reportedly made several missteps allowing cybersecurity analysts to pinpoint location and identify of one member showing clear sign of the groups link to Russia.
The digital biltz against US labs occured when un experts visited Russia-controlled Ukrainian territory to inspect Europe biggest atomic power plant to asses radiation risk amid shelling . “Cold River” appeared on US intelligence radar after it targeted British foreign office in 2016.
It has since then been involved in dozens of other high-profile hacking incidents as reuters. western officials say that the Russian government is a global leader in hacking and cyber-espionage . Moscow however has consistently denied it carries out hacking OPs on foreign govt or industries.
