People who have been struggling with the corona virus for a long time may have more damage to their vital organs. According to the BBC, a study conducted in the UK focused on the extent to which vital organs were affected in long-term Covid patients.
The study looked at 259 people who were hospitalized for the virus. Five months after discharge from the hospital, these patients were examined by MRI. The screening results were compared to a group of 52 people who had never had Covid.
The scans revealed that patients exposed to Covid-19 for a long period of time had a higher number of abnormal changes in organs such as the lungs, brain and kidneys. The study also determined that the lung may be the most affected organ in people with long-term exposure to Covid, and the organ in question is 14 times more likely to be affected.
It also revealed that in people with severe Covid, MRI scans were three times more likely to show brain changes while the kidneys were twice as likely to be affected. No significant changes were found in heart or liver health. The research, which is believed to help develop effective treatments for long-term Covid, has been published in the journal "Lancet Respiratory Medicine".
