4 wounded in shooting at shopping mall near Kansas City

Gunfire erupted at a shopping mall near Kansas City, causing injuries to four people and prompting panic among shoppers who rushed for shelter. The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. at the main entrance of the Independence Center, according to Independence police officer Jack Taylor.

Officer Taylor reported that one victim was critically injured after being struck in the head, while the conditions of the other three victims were not immediately known. Following the shooting, three individuals fled in a vehicle and were subsequently apprehended near the mall. Officer Taylor mentioned that the cause of the shooting wasn't immediately clear, but it appeared to involve a conflict between two groups.

Despite the presence of a police substation at the mall, the assigned officer was not on duty due to the Veterans Day holiday. Another Independence officer, who happened to be working at a nearby store, responded to the incident.
