Ukrainian troops stop Russian assault group with drone strike

By dropping ammunition from a drone, the pilot of the strike aerial reconnaissance of the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade stopped a group of Russian attack aircraft that were crawling towards Ukrainian positions. The video was published by the Butusov Plus Telegram channel.

Ukrainians are working overtime to build as many drones as possible for reconnaissance, to drop bombs, and to use as guided missiles. The country has also earmarked $1 billion for a program that supports bootstrapping drone start-ups and other drone acquisition efforts.

Ukrainian soldiers, forced to become electronic tinkerers from the first days of the war, now must be amateur supply chain managers, too.

Drones are primarily used for surveillance, intelligence gathering, propaganda, and strikes. Drones are easy targets as they are usually not built to evade aerial defences. They tend to fly low and slowly, and can often be destroyed with a single hit. However, combatting drones can be difficult as one needs to have the right drone defence systems in the right place, at the right time, while not spending significantly more money on fighting a drone than the drone is worth.
