The Election Act Amendment Bill 2023 has been approved by the National Assembly, after which the sword of lifelong disqualification was removed from the head of the former Prime Minister and leader of the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif.
According to Ary news the meeting of the National Assembly was presided over by Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf, in which the Finance Bill 2023 and the budget for the next fiscal year 2023-24 were approved along with the Election Act Amendment Bill by majority vote. The bill was presented by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar as a supplementary agenda in the House. The Senate has already approved the Election Act Amendment Bill.
With the approval of this bill, the sword of lifelong disqualification has been removed from the head of former prime minister and lifetime leader of the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif, but the path of eligibility has also been paved for others, including Patron Chief of the Stability Pakistan Party, Jahangir Tareen.
The Bill proposes to amend the Election Act under Article 62F. According to the approved Election Act Amendment Bill, the period of disqualification will not exceed 5 years. Apart from this, the Election Commission has got back the authority to announce the schedule and date of elections. Now the Election Commission will be able to give the date of general elections without consulting the President.
